Jaime Hayon: Contemporary Design Icon

Spanish artist-designer  was born in Madrid in 1974. As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, the foundation of the detailed, bold-yet-whimsical imagery so imminent in his work today. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris he joined Fabrica in 1997, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy, working closely with the legendary image-maker and agitator Oliviero Toscani. In a short time, he was promoted from student to head of their Design Department. Eight years later, Jaime broke out on his own, first with his collections of designer toys, ceramics and furniture, later followed by interior design and installations.

Times magazine included Hayon as one of the 100 most relevant creators of our times and Wallpaper magazine has listed him as one of the most influential creators of the last decade. Hayon is definitively one of the most talented figures in today’s contemporary design world. One of Jaime Hayon’s recent work is the Vico for , a new two and three-seater sofa and armchair, named after Hayon’s son as a special tribute. The project takes on a natural approach which unearths our innate desire to nest, to curl up in an organic shape and relax, without sacrificing the contemporary form, structure, and comfort which characterizes Italian design.

Hayon, always concerned with the production of finely crafted objects, thoroughly researched the heritage of Italian design and, by studying Cassina’s archives in particular from the 1950’s and 60’s, pinpointed several distinctive elements regarding the sofa to develop into a contemporary context. The result is surprising; the fluidity and sinuosity of the design, personalized with Hayon’s own characteristic style, has been interpreted through a typical Cassina filter, making the piece more essential and less decorative than many of his previous projects.

“I wanted to make something extremely comfortable, but visually very, very slim – like a lady on a catwalk.” Jaime Hayon

Also, the Ro armchair for  won an  in the category of seating. This is the third time Jaime Hayon is awarded by this prestigious international publication.

In the case of disposal, the chair and footstool can be disassembled into different parts (shell, legs and loose cushions) for recycling and special handling. The back shell of the chair requires special handling because of the embedded steel frame. The foam in the seat and back cushion can be granulated and re-used. The aluminum legs and all other metal parts can be recycled.
