A celebration of collaborations. Raf Simons, Kvadrat, Glenn Sestig and Cassina. Major players in fashion, design, textile, and architecture joined forces. Unexpectedly, it started in 2011 at Jil Sander, where Raf Simons filled the post of creative director. Simons’ search and fascination for heavy weight fabrics brought him to the Danish manufacturer of design textiles Kvadrat.
The result was a capsule collection designed by Raf Simons, manufactured by Kvadrat. The collection consists of upholstery fabrics, and a series of pillows and throws. Different from designing fashion fabrics, the Kvadrat/Raf Simons collection is durable, timeless, or put differently, resistant to the force of time that rules the fashion industry. The fabrics are demure, chic, and play on your imagination.
Yet to talk about are the other guilty parties that were involved in the Kvadrat/Raf Simons collection. A collaboration of such order deserves a fitting presentation. That is where Belgium architect and industrial designer Glenn Sestig comes in. He had the honour to design a display unit to present the fabrics at the launch of Kvadrat/Raf Simons on the 13th of February.
The unique piece of furniture will serve as a retail unit and will demand the middle of the room in stores all over the world, to exhibit the textiles. Glenn Sestig’s retail unit has been taken into production by iconic furniture company Cassina. And that’s how Harry met Sally. Two Belgians, a Dane and an Italian. Not a lame joke, but cross-national success story full of synergy!
